The importance of a Social Media Strategy

In today’s online arena, considering social media for your business has become somewhat of a “no brainer”. However, we ask ourselves: how effective is social media really and how can it benefit my company/brand?

These are valid questions and are ones that should be asked before any person decides to embark on a social media strategy. The truth is, any business or person can create a social media presence, but whether it is effective or relevant to what they trying to achieve, is questionable.

  • Do I want to create awareness of my brand/company using this medium?
  • Is my target market using this communication channel?
  • Do I want to change the perception of my company/business?
  • Do I want to drive sales through social media?
  • What do I hope to achieve by using this online medium?


Once the objective is clearly defined we also need to consider a few more things. Often companies/brands attempts in the social media space do not achieve the desired effect as the following haven’t been taken into account:
 

  • Why would a user want to interact with my company/brand in a social media space?
  • What can a user get out of the interaction with me online?
  • Would a user want to interact with my company/brand online and tell their friends about it?
